#Brent averill 1073 ebay Patch
Plus I only have 20 rack spaces in my desk and am committed to staying within that constraint for outboard (and that includes power supplies and patch bays). Not having to constantly troubleshoot a patch bay is just an added bonus. That's why I find the most value in integrated channel channel strips where you can work the incoming signal with EQ and compression before it goes to tape, and the density of the GTQCs were the biggest reason I went that route. FWIW, I could have gone with something like a GTQ2 plus a Drawmer 1968, Neve 5254, or UKB Fatso and landed in about the same spot tonally. Oddly enough, I ran a test comparing my GTQC's to my Manley Core, which AFAIK has a significant preamp architecture design (faster slew rate, more API'ish, more initial transient), but with the tiniest decrease in the high shelf and a little clamp on the compressor attack the two were nearly indistinguishable. The margins between all these Neve'ish high end pre's is pretty thin. It's hard to beat the quality and versatility of these units in the density of a 1u.Ĭlick to expand.I find all the Neve clone preamps I've used - Vintech, BAE, AMS, AML - to all be very close. Not cheap, but I'll probably own them until I have to be sent off to the glue factory. Overall, they are incredibly awesome tracking units, which is what I bought them for. Since I do most of my tracking with these, I generally don't want to hear them on the 2 buss anyhow.

I have other units for stereo chores, so no big deal for me. There is a stereo link between the compressors which I have not used, so maybe that would fix the phase issues, but not sure why it would. I also don't like to run them against stereo signals because they often end up out of phase. My only knocks against these is that the gain isn't exactly matched between the units. Occasionally FET or combined for tracking peaky signals or when I want to whack some transients. I mostly just use it in Opto for transparently smoothing out guitar, bass, synth/keys, or vox during tracking. Has a separate FET and Opto circuit which can be chained, so it's a jack of many trades. The compressor is the real star of the GTQC and super versatile. The EQ is not as versatile as Vintech x73s (hi shelf, low shelf, and mid with 3 fixed bands only), but useful enough for tracking and sounds great. It's hard to beat the quality and versatility of these units in the density of a 1u.
